If you were hoping to see a lovely photo of Ratatouille, tomorrow should be your lucky day. (I wonder if “the ratatouille is in the oven” is beginning to sound like “the check is in the mail”? We’ll shall see tomorrow…)
In my 30 minutes of industrious cooking yesterday, I was able to make the stewed tomatoes and start some bread. Three cheers for the slow cooker and the bread machine – two wonderful devices that cook on their own!!!
This bread is a whole wheat version of a terrific French Herb bread. It is far more delicious made with white bread flour, but quite tolerable in its 100% whole wheat version. See recipe below…
In case you were curious, the great part of yesterday was visiting several National Night Out events, where we met a lot of wonderful people working hard to build community in their neighborhoods. It was a very uplifting evening!
French Herb Bread (from the Breadman Instruction Manual)
1 1/2 c 80F water
1 1/2 T Olive Oil
2 t salt
2 T sugar
1 t dried herbs
1/4 t dehydrated minced garlic (I omitted this, but increased the amount of garlic powder)
1/4 t garlic powder
4 c Bread Flour (I used the King Arthur White Wheat)
2 1/4 t active dry yeast
Select French cycle
