With Hurricane Irene soon approaching North Carolina, it seemed like the right time to harvest my garden.

The photo at left shows the sum total of my homegrown veggies this summer. Not much, but at least they are cute. Hopefully, the basil and the other herbs will be fine in the rain. Lesson learned. Plant herbs, buy squash (and peppers).

In other food news, the girls’ first days of school were fine except that neither managed to negotiate the school lunch line. After one day, they are taking lunch from home. Hot school lunch item: Soynut clusters! I’ll have to add some more lunch foods to my weekend cooking agenda.
